About
The Smart City Business Forum brings together around 400 decision makers to discuss key challenges for the smart and climate-neutral city. This year, we will focus on the private sector’s role in achieving cities’ smart and climate-neutrality targets, creating opportunities for public and private actors to connect, build partnerships and take steps in accelerating urban transformation. The program will consist of high-level keynotes, matchmaking, and workshops around specific challenges hosted by a variety of international public and private partners.

A vast reservoir of information on human health and lifestyle habits lives in our sewage. Smart cities can gather information from their inhabitants which had not imagined before.
In this session, the Scorewater EU project partners will present their experience within the city of Barcelona for wastewater monitoring in sewers. We managed to place multiple measuring stations across the city, and gathered valuable data. Now it’s time for the next steps, since in our opinion all cities should have a network of sensors to manage water quality & quantity. But how do we scale from here? We invite government representatives, solution providers in the field of water management, investors, organizations active on the topics of health and education to join the discussion on how to create different types of value for cities, citizens, and investors with wastewater monitoring.

Increasing urbanization asks for a new vision on urban mobility. To create an inclusive and welcoming mobility system for everyone from 8 to 88 years old, we need an ever-growing multi-modality system. Until now, the car has been dominant in our mobility systems, but it is likely that in the future we need a different approach.
During this session we will discuss the implementation and exploitation challenges of multi-modal solutions, the technological aspects, lessons learned, and the creation of mobility hubs. We want to have stakeholders with different backgrounds at the table from the public and private sector because we believe that we need to work together to create a well-functioning system. What we want to get out of this session is cooperation and to learn from each other’s experiments and best practices.

The Cities Mission has launched a Moonshot: 100 Climate Neutral Cities by 2030. If cities want to play the Moonshot “game”, they have to play by “moonshot” rules: unlimited access to funding, unlimited access to a pool of talented human resources, a vision going beyond political disputes, unquestioning support of the ecosystem, and the use of the 21-century digital tools
The challenge is particularly high when it comes to financing as cities are very classical risk-adverse players. However, the financial landscape is profoundly evolving with the ESG regulation, the ETS and even crowdfunding. Investors are now urged to find investments producing revenues and creating social and environmental values.
Trust and common understanding between cities and investors present a major challenge, but progress has been made, embodied by the latest generation of Smart Cities and Communities projects.
Our workshop aims to address those critical challenges and engage a debate between cities and investors on how they can work together to: bridge the funding gap, create cities' specific climate purpose vehicles or innovative financial schemes, combining public/private partnership (with the cities taking a golden share) and accelerate the pace of implementation.

The EU and its programs will help European cities in its ambition to achieve climate-neutrality and will provide lots of frameworks and models. However, top-down frameworks do not automatically lead to more finance, ownership and innovation. The candle burns at two ends. Climate neutrality is a quest that can be won only by connecting and combining top-down and bottom-up innovative approaches and finance opportunities.
Digital transformation is a key driver of transformational change of existing and new digital (energy) infrastructures. Unfortunately, the development of digital infrastructures does not always keep up with the pace of digital innovation and the need of citizens. This slows down the market development of innovative, integrated and sustainable solutions, which are highly necessary to achieve climate goals. How to speed up?
In this session a broad spectrum of people addresses four challenges from their point of view and let participants in the workshop work out an implementation plan for cities – that includes solutions from start-ups and business. Since nothing will happen in isolation, challenges are brought in by a cluster of organisations.

A lot of electricity grid operators Europe wide are struggling with the upgrade and renewal of their electricity networks due to growing electricity demand by consumer and business customers. Also the demand of EV charging and the generation of solar energy, tops the challenges of the grid operators. This leads to certain areas where electricity grid operators can’t deliver electricity connections to new business customers.

How to make Europe greener and more digital are the twin challenges for our generation, and our success in meeting them will define our future. BUT, the cities are not good enough at data sharing, and with no data there will be no twin transition.
This seminar-style session will begin with educational presentations covering what can be achieved when we agree on a common infrastructure, what are the consequences if there is no agreement, and the different paths towards a common IoT data infrastructure – within a city, within a country, and within the EU. We will then look at practical case studies from the City of Stockholm and from Europe. Lastly, we will open it up to interactive sharing - share your good advice, share your failures, share your experience.

This session aims to highlight the investments to be made within digitalization in Spain and Italy, as part of the 2ext Generation EU funds, which open business opportunities for private companies. As cities are aiming to become smarter, sustainable, and more livable, investing in digital technologies will be a key component in managing a successful green and digital transition. The financial support that will be provided to Spain and Italy within the scope of Next Generation EU represent the largest investments ever made into digitalization.
Business Sweden, Business Finland, and Netherlands Business Support Office will within this session present key investments opportunities outlined the Spanish and Italian Recovery & Resilience plans, highlight key public and private stakeholders’ active in the implementation, as well as discuss Spain’s and Italy’s digital agenda. The session would therefore provide with both insights and thoughts on the digital investments taking place in Spain and Italy, highlighting the complexity of dealing with large scale digital investments.
The session will focus on both a public and private digital sector audience. Local municipalities, such as the cities of Milan, Bologna, Parma, Barcelona, Madrid and/or Malaga will be engaged in the discussion.
